Proposing an edge-case privacy feature to Signal Community, providing an extra layer in private communication

Signal Community

Open-source & community-based encrypted messaging app

Signal is a secure and encrypted instant messaging app developed by the non-profit Signal Foundation and its subsidiary, Signal Messenger LLC.

The app allows users to send private messages, including files, voice notes, images, and videos, to individuals or groups.

The Probelm

Signal faces a privacy challenge

Publicly reading messages on a phone without a physical polarized filter installed posed a threat to user privacy.

The Objective

Create a new feature to increase privacy

Create a new feature that aligns with the app's philosophy of providing secure and private messaging.

The Solution

A flexible in-chat privacy window

An in-chat flexible window that hides all messages except the one being read.

Mock up screens for Signal Community

Enable privacy window

Hovering proximity sensor or with the eye icon

There are two main methods for enabling the privacy feature on the chat window:

Hovering over the proximity sensor

Tapping the eye icon on the top bar.

Once the privacy feature is activated, all text and images in the chat will be obscured.

Flexiblility and control

Read only what you want

To view the messages, the user must simply tap on the icon on the blurred screen, which will open a window that displays the conversation one line at a time.

The user can then scroll through the chat, choosing to either highlight or hide specific content as desired.

When they remove their finger from the icon, the window will close automatically.
